Engineering Universities in Ukraine > Yuriy Fedkovich Chernivtsi National University

Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University is one of the oldest classical universities in Ukraine. It is located in the stately building of modern Chernivtsi - a complex built in 1864-1882 as the residence of the Metropolitan of Bukovina by the design of the famous Czech architect Joseph Glavka. The interiors were executed by Viennese artists K. Iobst, I. Klein, Czech K. Svoboda, Bukovyna E. Buchevsky and E. Maksimovich. The style of the buildings is eclectic with the dominant motif of Byzantine and Romanesque architecture.

In 1868, a question was raised in the Bukovyna Diet on establishing a law academy in Chernivtsi. And in 1872, the deputy of the region, Dr. Konstantin Tomashchuk, at the meeting of November 28, 1872, put forward and justified the proposal to establish a university in Chernivtsi.

By the decree of the Austrian Emperor Franz-Joseph of March 31, 1875, the Chernivtsi University was founded, including the Theological Faculty of Greek-Orthodox - the only Orthodox faculty in the Austrian Empire.

On October 4, 1875, the grand opening of the university, which was called the Franz Josef Chernivtsi University, was held.

It was named after Franz Josephs in 1875-1918, Universitatea Regele Carol I din Cernauti (1919-1940), and Chernivtsi State University after 1940. Since 1989 Chernivtsi University has been given the name of Yuri Fedkovich.

The first rector is a well-known scientist and public figure K. Tomashchuk. European and world-class scholars have taught and conducted research here: economist J. Schumpeter, lawyer G. Gross, historian R. Kindl, Slavic O. Kaluzhnyatsky, linguist S. Smal-Stotsky.

After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, until 1940, the University was considered to be a Romanian higher education institution.

In 1940, after the entry of the Northern Bukovina into the USSR, the University was reorganized into a state higher education institution with the Ukrainian language of instruction. In 1989, the University was named after the prominent Bukovyna writer Yuriy Fedkovich, and in 2000 it was given the status of national.

Today, the University has 2 institutes: the Institute of Biology, Chemistry and Bioresources and the Institute of Physical and Computer Science, 12 faculties: geography, economics, foreign languages, history, political science and international relations, architecture, construction and arts and crafts, pedagogy, psychology and social work, mathematics and informatics, philological, philosophical-theological, faculty of finance, business and accounting, faculty of physical culture and human health, law; college. There is a department of military training.
